Day Trip to Cairo and the Pyramids of Giza

Pyramids Trip from Hurghada

Experience one of the Seven Wonders of the World! Our Pyramids trip from Hurghada takes you to the legendary Pyramids of Giza and the mysterious Sphinx. Including a visit to the Egyptian Museum.

What to Expect on a Pyramids Day Trip from Hurghada

The Pyramids of Giza are the only surviving wonder of the ancient world and undoubtedly Egypt's most iconic landmark. A day trip to the pyramids from Hurghada is one of the most impressive experiences you can have during your Egypt holiday. When you stand before these colossal stone monuments and the Sphinx offers you its enigmatic smile, you truly grasp the fascination of this ancient civilization.

From Hurghada, you can reach Cairo by domestic flight in just about one hour. This short flight makes the Cairo excursion far more comfortable than the six-hour bus ride and gives you considerably more time for sightseeing on-site. At Cairo Airport, your English-speaking guide welcomes you and your discovery trip through thousands of years of Egyptian history begins immediately.

In addition to the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, the day trip includes the world-famous Egyptian Museum at Tahrir Square with its countless treasures, including the golden death mask of Tutankhamun. Depending on your excursion option, you also visit the vibrant Khan el-Khalili bazaar in Cairo's Islamic old town, where you can immerse yourself in the atmosphere of an oriental market.

Schedule & Program

Pyramids of Giza

The three great Pyramids of Giza, built for Pharaohs Cheops, Chephren, and Mykerinos, form the centerpiece of your excursion. The Great Pyramid of Cheops, with an original height of 146 meters, was the tallest structure on Earth for over 3,800 years. Even today, at 138 meters, it remains an overwhelming sight. Your guide will explain how the ancient Egyptians constructed these monumental structures from approximately 2.3 million stone blocks, each averaging 2.5 tons, over 4,500 years ago.

You will have the opportunity to see the pyramids up close and admire the perfect precision of the stone blocks. Optionally, you can enter the Great Pyramid for an additional fee and make your way through the narrow passage to the King's Chamber. The panoramic viewpoint on the Giza Plateau offers a spectacular view of all three pyramids with Cairo's skyline in the background, a photo opportunity like no other. An optional short camel ride around the pyramids is also available.

The Great Sphinx

Just a few hundred meters from the pyramids, the Great Sphinx guards the Giza Plateau. This 73-meter-long and 20-meter-high statue with the body of a lion and the head of a human is one of the largest and oldest monuments in the world. Numerous myths and riddles surround the Sphinx, about which your guide will share fascinating insights. The Sphinx has been missing its nose for centuries, and the true story of its loss remains debated to this day. Take your time for the classic perspective photo where it looks as if you are kissing the Sphinx.

Egyptian Museum

The Egyptian Museum at Tahrir Square in Cairo houses the world's largest collection of ancient Egyptian art and artifacts. Over 120,000 exhibits across two floors tell the story of more than 5,000 years of Egyptian civilization. The absolute highlight is the Tutankhamun Gallery with the legendary golden death mask, the golden throne, and countless other burial treasures of the young pharaoh. Your guide leads you to the most important exhibits and explains their historical significance. Plan at least ninety minutes for the museum, as there is an incredible amount to discover.

Khan el-Khalili Bazaar

Khan el-Khalili is one of the oldest and most famous bazaars in the Orient, founded in the 14th century. In the labyrinthine alleys, you will find spice stalls, goldsmiths, copperware, alabaster vessels, papyrus paintings, and traditional Egyptian souvenirs. The atmosphere is unique: the scent of incense and freshly brewed coffee mingles with the calls of merchants. Enjoy a traditional Egyptian mint tea at the historic Cafe El-Fishawi, which has been open continuously since 1797.

Lunch

A traditional Egyptian lunch is included in the excursion price. You dine at a selected restaurant with views of the pyramids or in downtown Cairo. The menu includes typical Egyptian dishes such as ful medames, grilled kofta, rice, fresh salads, and flatbread. Vegetarian options are available.

Prices & Booking

The pyramids day trip from Hurghada with domestic flight is available from 250 euros per person. This price includes the round-trip flight Hurghada-Cairo, all transfers in Cairo by air-conditioned vehicle, all entrance fees for the pyramids, the Sphinx, and the Egyptian Museum, an English-speaking guide for the entire day, and lunch. The flight departs in the morning around 7:00 AM, and you are back at your hotel in Hurghada by approximately 9:00 PM.

We also offer a bus version from 75 euros per person. This option departs around 2:00 AM and includes an approximately six-hour drive to Cairo. It is significantly cheaper but requires some endurance. For travelers with more time, we recommend our two-day Cairo excursion with overnight stay, which also includes the Citadel of Saladin, the Muhammad Ali Mosque, and the Coptic Quarter.

Children between 6 and 12 years receive a 50 percent discount. Private excursions with a dedicated vehicle and personal guide are ideal for families and offer maximum flexibility. Book your pyramids excursion early, as flight seats are limited.

Tips & Advice

Wear comfortable walking shoes, as you will cover a lot of ground on sand and stones at the Giza Plateau. Sun protection is important even in winter, as the sun in Cairo can be intense even in December. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. In summer, temperatures above 40 degrees are common, so we schedule sightseeing during the cooler morning hours.

For the Egyptian Museum, avoid bringing large bags or backpacks as they must be checked at the entrance. A small crossbody bag for your camera, money, and documents is sufficient. Keep your passport ready as it is required for the domestic flight and occasionally at security checkpoints. At the bazaar, friendly bargaining is customary and expected. Start with a counter-offer of about half the stated price.

Please note that entering the Great Pyramid is not included in the standard price and must be paid separately on-site. The passage inside is very narrow and low. People with claustrophobia or circulation issues should refrain from entering. There are no photography restrictions in the outdoor areas of the pyramids.

History of the Pyramids of Giza

The Pyramids of Giza were built over 4,500 years ago during the 4th Dynasty of the Old Kingdom. The Great Pyramid of Cheops was constructed over approximately 20 years under Pharaoh Khufu and, upon completion, was the most perfect geometric structure ever created by human hands. The base forms a nearly perfect square with a maximum deviation of only a few centimeters. The pyramid is precisely aligned to the cardinal points, which, given the technical capabilities of the time, borders on the miraculous.

The Sphinx guarding the Giza Plateau is possibly even older than the pyramids themselves. Carved from a single limestone rock, it depicts a lion with a human head and symbolizes strength and wisdom. Over the centuries, wind, sand, and water have taken their toll on the statue, yet its presence has lost none of its power. Visiting these monuments leaves you speechless and fills you with deep reverence for the achievements of the ancient Egyptians.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Pyramids Trip

Can you go inside the pyramids?

Yes, the interior of the Great Pyramid can be entered for an additional fee of approximately 20 euros paid on-site. Access is through a narrow, low passage leading to the King's Chamber in the center of the pyramid, where you will find the empty granite sarcophagus of the pharaoh. The experience is unique but not recommended for people with claustrophobia or circulation issues. The interior is warm and the air is stuffy. The number of visitors allowed simultaneously is limited, which can sometimes result in waiting times.

How does the Cairo flight excursion differ from the bus version?

The main difference lies in travel time and comfort. The flight excursion takes only one hour each way, while the bus journey takes approximately six hours per direction. With the flight version, you have significantly more time for sightseeing in Cairo and can enjoy the day more relaxedly. The bus excursion departs at 2 AM and is the much cheaper option but requires endurance. Both versions visit the same sights and include the same services on location.

Is the Cairo trip suitable for older travelers?

In principle yes, though you should have a certain level of physical fitness. At the Giza Plateau, there is considerable walking over sand and uneven terrain, and temperatures can be taxing especially in summer. For older travelers, we recommend the flight excursion as the bus journey can be very tiring. At the Giza Plateau, vehicles are available that shorten some distances. The Egyptian Museum has no elevators, and the exhibition halls span two floors.
